Music for Recovery: Listen to Music
Molly Greist
(continued)
Molly was also deeply inspired by the stonework and devout faith of sculptor, James W. Washington Jr. She felt drawn to carving stone for strength and healing. Also, she made a connection between stonework and her son’s name, Peter, which comes from the word petros or rock, stone. This proved to carry profound significance.
She bought a hammer and chisels and went into her backyard, found a stone and started to carve. As it took shape, she was stunned to discover the form of a baby, a beautiful baby ready to come out of the mother’s womb. This was a moment of clarity – of enlightenment.
Her stone carvings took on life – birds, the lined faces of old men and crones, little creatures, rain catchers, memorial stones and headstones, even a piece for her daughter’s school with carvings made from drawing of the children. The music of Eric and Nancy inspired her creative work. Molly explains, “Their music conjures creativity and provides comfort inside in a very safe way when you are most vulnerable.”
Over the years, Molly read grief and recovery literature and learned her transformation process was not typical. She felt moved to share her experience with others who were struggling through grief and began speaking at conferences on “Creativity and Transformation in Grief.”
Through it all, she had the support of friends and family, as well as the music of Eric and Nancy. When Molly and Steve renewed their marriage vows, they asked Nancy to perform at the ceremony. Molly says, “The sound of Nancy’s English horn and Oboe penetrates to a place within me. Their presence and the live performance takes their music to a whole other level! Their music is a part of my life. It has helped our marriage through trying times, it has been my “Comfort and Joy” and helped me to rebuild myself. I love to share Eric and Nancy’s music, in fact I recommended it be used in the documentary “Grief is More Than Crying” about my creative life after loss. I've also given their music to others with the hope that it will offer “A Moments Peace” or just bring sheer pleasure.”
